Membership of the centre

Once you've done a couple of learning programmes at the cybercentre you can qualify to be a member. This ensures you have priority use of the computers. It means you can access the internet at times to suit you. There is no charge for membership – but a lot of benefits. So enrol on a learning programme now and become a member.

What's available at the centre?

The cybercentre has two suites of computers. The larger one has 12 machines - all networked to the internet. They all have the latest software so if you want to learn word processing or using spreadsheets, you can do that here. All computers have internet access.

Downstairs there is the second suite where eight people at a time can train to be PC support workers. This is more like a workshop where trainees learn to build and maintain computers.

Both rooms have links to printers and scanners in the building.

A third area is a small computer studio where people who already use programmes like Quark Express and Photoshop can practice their design skills. This has 2 Macs and 2 PCs.

The centre has a security system and all users are logged in to the machine they use. Internet access is protected by a 'firewall' and software to prevent offensive material being accessed.

The centre is primarily for use by adults (the UK Online programme which funds the cybercentre insists on this). But we do plan to involve young people too. You can make contact to find out about these plans. There will be opportunities for homework clubs and other access. Phone us on 0207 394 0923. See the rules of the cybercentre for how we want people to behave.

Want your own website?

Once the centre is up and running for a few months we hope to identify people who would like to learn how to build their own website. We have several website design packages including Front Page, Dream Weaver and Go Live. It's best to attend for three full days for this type of course.

If local small businesses want to have a web presence we may be able to help them. There will be a charge for this service.

Set up your own PC

We know people who have saved up to buy a computer, or been given one - then it sits in a box because no-one knows how to set it up! We may be able to help with this. Then when you've set up your computer you want to go on the internet and don't know how to do that. Again we can help. Depending on demand we hope to run some sessions to help people with these problems. Contact us if you are interested. Phone 0207 394 0923.

Staff at the cybercentre

Sonia is the centre co-ordinator who works at the centre.

There are tutors for the PC support trainees, from Lewisham College. Volunteers are also able to train as mentors.

We really want a band of local people to get involved in the day to day learning sessions - perhaps helping absolute beginners to make progress with computers. If you are interested please contact us. We're dying to hear from you! Phone 0207 394 0923.

Want to get more involved?

If you are interested in getting more involved in the cybercentre we want to meet you. We particularly want to involve people who are keen to share their skills and are good at encouraging reluctant computer users! Interested? Contact us. You can ring Sonia on 0207 394 0923 or email smeggie@silwoodonline.org.uk.
